“Gold Tier
I was setting up my husband Daniel’s surprise fortieth birthday party, a genuinely happy Saturday morning, streamers half-hung and a cake already cooling on the counter, when I went through his wallet for his driver’s license to finalize the restaurant’s private guest list.
Tucked behind his own cards was a hotel loyalty membership card, gold tier status, issued in a name I didn’t immediately recognize as I flipped it over in my hand.
Then I looked up across the room and saw the exact same name printed on the small work badge still clipped to his coworker Jenna’s cardigan, the same Jenna currently standing on a step stool helping me hang streamers across our own living room.
Gold tier status takes a minimum of twelve stays within a single calendar year to earn, according to the hotel chain’s own published loyalty program requirements, a detail I only knew because I’d looked it up right there on my phone before saying anything to anyone.
Twelve stays, minimum, all logged under a joint travel companion account with Jenna’s name listed as the primary member and Daniel’s name listed as the linked companion account holder.
I hadn’t known my husband had traveled anywhere with a coworker even once over the past year, let alone stayed together often enough to hit gold tier status together on a shared, linked account.
Jenna was standing only eight feet away from me, still holding a string of balloons, when I held the card up in front of both of them and read her own name off it out loud for the room to hear.
I looked between the two of them, decorations still half-hung around us, and said, “”Twelve stays together got you gold tier. Explain that to me right now.””
